Beyond the Diwali Gift Box: Turning Contractor Gifting Into Year-Round Painter, Electrician and Carpenter Loyalty

Table of Contents

A contractor loyalty program in India often starts in the week before Diwali, without anyone calling it that. The trade marketing team signs off the gift list. Boxes are packed: a dinner set for the top painters, a smartwatch for the senior electricians, a sweets hamper for every carpenter on the dealer’s list. The field team spends three days handing them out at counters and on sites. The karigar says thank you, takes a photo, and goes back to work.

That gift is a good instinct. It says, “We value you.” The opportunity is to make it the first step of something that lasts until next Diwali, rather than a once-a-year thank you. This blog shows how.

1. Why the Contractor Decides the Brand

In paints, wires, adhesives and plywood, the homeowner pays, but the contractor usually chooses. The numbers back this up:

  • 80% of decorative paint demand in India comes from repainting (Source: IMARC Group, India Decorative Paint Market). Repainting is a job the painter quotes, plans and often buys for.
  • Contractor recommendations drive around 60% of brand demand for JSW Paints (Source: WARC, JSW Paints case study, 2024).
  • Panasonic Life Solutions India puts 70 to 75% of its marketing budget into below-the-line influencer activity, mainly with electricians (Source: Social Samosa, 2024).
  • Pidilite describes adhesives as “a carpenter-decision product, not a consumer product” (Source: Groww Digest, How Pidilite Glued an Empire).

One line from a recent piece on the wires and cables category sums it up: “The celebrity creates awareness; the electrician creates recommendation.” (Source: Exchange4Media, September 2026)

The karigar is your most important salesperson who isn’t on your payroll. The Diwali gift is how most brands say thank you. The question is what happens over the other 364 days.

2. The Gift Box vs. the Contractor Loyalty Program

Both cost money. Both say thank you. They buy very different things.

Here is the real insight. Gifting is already a line item. India’s gifting market is worth around USD 816 million, and corporate gifting makes up 36.2% of it, growing faster than personal gifting (Source: IMARC Group, India Gifting Market). You do not need new budget to build a program. You need to make the money you already spend on gifts do more work.

3. Three Trades, Three Scenes

These are illustrative scenes, built from how each trade typically works.

The Painter

Sunil runs a crew of four in Pune. Between Dussehra and Diwali, he repaints eleven homes. Almost every client asks him, “Which paint should we use?”

With the gift box: He gets a dinner set from one brand and a pressure cooker from another. In January, he recommends whichever dealer gave him the better rate on that day.

Inside a program: Every bucket he opens has a QR under the lid. He scans it on site and gets points in his wallet within minutes. By Diwali, he is one tier away from “Gold Applicator”, and he knows exactly how many litres it will take to get there. He recommends your brand because every job moves him forward.

The Electrician

Imran wires new flats and rewires old homes in Lucknow. He chooses the wire, the switches and the MCBs, and the homeowner rarely questions him.

With the gift box: A smartwatch at Diwali. Nice, but it has nothing to do with which wire he pulls through the conduit next week.

Inside a program: He scans the QR on every coil box and sees cash land in his bank account. Panasonic Life Solutions India runs exactly this model with its electrician app, and active electricians grew from about 25,000 to over 35,000 in a year (Source: Social Samosa, 2024).

The Carpenter

Mahesh builds modular kitchens and wardrobes in Jaipur. Adhesive is a small part of his bill. A failed bond would cost him his reputation.

With the gift box: A sweets hamper. It gets shared with the family and forgotten.

Inside a program: Points on every purchase, a skills workshop on new laminates, and a health check-up camp for him and his family. Pidilite’s Fevicol Champions Club has done this for years, pairing reward points with training, medical check-ups and on-site demos (Source: afaqs, interview with Pidilite CMO Vivek Sharma). Glue is only 1 to 2% of a project’s cost, so the carpenter is not loyal for the discount. He is loyal because the brand looks after him (Source: Groww Digest).

4. 5 Ways to Build a Contractor Loyalty Program Beyond the Diwali Gift

Way 1: Put a QR Inside This Year’s Gift Box

The simplest move costs almost nothing. Add a card with a QR to every Diwali gift. The contractor scans it, joins your program on WhatsApp, and finds welcome points already loaded. Your gift has now become an enrolment drive. Every box that goes out brings back a phone number, a trade, a town and a consent record.

Do this: Print one QR per box, linked to the contractor’s dealer, so you know which counter each member came from.

Way 2: Reward the Scan, Not the Season

A Diwali gift rewards a relationship. A scan rewards a recommendation that actually happened. Put a unique QR on every bucket, coil box or adhesive pack. When the contractor scans it on site, the points go to him. You get proof of usage at the point of installation — something no gift list can tell you.

Do this: Start with your three highest-margin SKUs. Expand once scan rates are steady.

Way 3: Pay in Minutes, on UPI

A karigar’s cash flow is daily. A reward that takes 45 days to settle is a reward he has stopped believing in. Pay points out as instant UPI cashback or digital vouchers, straight after the scan. Speed builds trust, and trust builds repeat behaviour. Members who redeem rewards spend 3.1 times more than those who do not (Source: Netguru, ROI of Modern Loyalty Programs, 2026).

Do this: Make the first payout reachable within the first week of joining.

Way 4: Give Them a Tier Worth Talking About

Pidilite’s CMO put it simply: “Every carpenter wants to be a contractor.” (Source: afaqs) Aspiration is the strongest motivator in the trade. Build three tiers — for example Karigar, Expert, Master. Give each one visible status: a badge on the app, a certificate, a mention at the annual painter meet, early access to new products. Add a gamified layer with monthly leaderboards by town, so contractors compete with their peers, not just with a target.

Do this: Turn next year’s Diwali gift into a tier reward. The best gift goes to the contractors who earned it, not just those on the list. Gamified promotions make the journey to each tier more engaging.

Way 5: Reward the Person, Not Just the Purchase

The most loyal contractors stay for what the brand does for their life, not only their wallet.

  • Skills: Certification workshops on new products and techniques
  • Health: Check-up camps and accident insurance for active members
  • Family: Scholarships or school-kit rewards for their children
  • Experiences: Pilgrimage trips or family outings for top-tier members, through experiential rewards

These cost less than they look, because they go to members who are already driving your sales. And the payoff of keeping them is large: a 5% increase in retention can lift profits by 25 to 95% (Source: Bain & Company).

Do this: Pick one non-cash benefit for 2027 and announce it with this year’s Diwali gift.

5. Before Next Diwali: A Checklist

Use this to plan the next twelve months.

  • Every Diwali gift box this year carries an enrolment QR
  • Your top three SKUs carry scan-and-earn QRs on pack
  • Contractors can check points and get payouts on WhatsApp
  • The first UPI payout lands within a week of joining
  • You have three tiers with visible status
  • At least one non-cash benefit (skills, health or family) is live
  • You can see active contractors by town, trade and SKU
  • Next Diwali’s gift is a tier reward, not a list gift

Six or more ticks: your gift has become a program. Three to five: you have the pieces. Connect them before the next festive season. Two or fewer: start with Ways 1 and 3. They are the quickest wins.

6. In Closing

The Diwali gift box is not the problem. It is the most visible thank you a brand gives its contractors all year. The opportunity is in what comes after it. A QR in the box, a scan on every site, a payout in minutes, a tier worth earning, and a brand that remembers the karigar’s family as well as his invoices.

Do that, and next Diwali the contractor will not just thank you for the gift. He will have spent the whole year recommending you.
